Meeting a Real Hero... And Reaching Out...

We had our chance to meet 2009 CNN Hero of the Year Efren Penaflorida. And be a part of his noble work of making education accessible to children like us but cannot afford it. In a way, we felt like heroes too! We joined the outreach program "My Dream in a Shoebox" 2010.

First, we each put together a "gift shoebox"-- wrapped them with nice Christmas wrapper, and filled each box with school supplies. Then, we volunteered to help with the distribution of these boxes to about 200 kids at the Ladislao Diwa Elementary School in Cavite City. What a day it was! It felt so good to help out and spend our time helping others. Diego put it perfectly into words - "Today was awesome!"

Mom says that last year, My Dream in a Shoebox was able to collect and distribute 200 boxes. But this year was bigger with the number of shoeboxes growing more than fivefold to about 1,132! It was such a big success and we are proud to be part of it.

Merry Christmas to all!

Simbang Gabi 2010

We did it again this year-- woke up very early in the morning and caught the 4:40AM Misa de Gallo. We also caught the break of day -- Coolnes!.. both literally and figuratively.

Gun Show at Megamall

We heard it through the car radio- a show on arms and ammunition at Megamall. We looked at each other and blurted out, "Mom, can we go?!"

Ofcourse, the answer to that question was a yes. Only, Mom who is not the biggest fan of guns, contracted Dad to go with us. It was a boys' day out! And a blast.. can be literal.

The show was awesome! Packed with all types of guns and ammos and gadgets and everything related. Best part was that we actually got to hold, carry and "try" these stuff!

We also found out that this event is actually held a few times every year. Now, that is something to look forward to.

Awesome Birthday Cakes

Our birthday cakes keep getting better and better every year!

Birthday Boys in Universal Studios Singapore

As we turn 11 and 8 this year, Dad and Mom presented us a super blast birthday gift- a trip to Universal Studios Singapore. Coolness!!

So on our sem-break form school, we packed our bags and headed to the state city of Singapore. We revisited some of our "favorite" sites such as Clark Quay, Hawkers foodcourt, Orchard Road, the malls and ofcourse Toys R Us stores. But mostly, for this trip, we went to some places unexplored by us in the past-- like getting close and personal with the Merlion. Funny, that in all our past visits to Singapore, we never really got the chance to come near the Merlion. Also, finally got to do some malling at the Durian mall, Esplanade.

We also discovered and explored the Mint Museum of Toys. A small museum within the city (at the back of the equally historic Raffles Hotel) that features a collection of classic, traditional and hard to find toys dating back from the 1940s. There were teddy bears of all types and sizes. Matchbox cars in their original "matchbox" boxes! Toy guns evolving from tin to plastic.. with crackling sound to ones with cork bullets. Classic toys such as tops, climbing monkeys, toy soldiers, dolls, and superheroes novelties. We got a little excited with the TinTin coollection. And even posed side by side a Tintin (and Snowy) figure as tall as us.

And Singapore being a small country/city, it is understandable that most of the buildings and structures are high-rise. Most of them offering fantastic views of the entire city. So we got enough highs from being on top of some of these and enjoyed birds eyeview of the city. We climbed up the Sky Park, the Esplanade deck and the newest grand viewing attraction -The Sands Marina .

But ofcourse, the highlight of the trip was Universal Studios! It was really awesome-we loved the Jurrassic Park ride! A coast down the rapids with some close encounters with dinosaurs. Plus, we got wet on the side which added to the excitement. This was clearly our favorite.

Our next favorite was the "Lights, Camera, Action!" show at Hollywood land. This show was hosted by Steven Spielberg no less. We got a good view of how movies and special effects are made. We stepped onto Hollywood Boulevard set in the classic movie era of the 1930s. In the midst of palm trees, we saw the era's distinct architecture (oh the diners!) and the famous Walk of Fame.

We also liked the Shrek 4D show. It was really funny and got us at the edge of our seats, literally. At FFA (Far Far Away), we rode the Enchanted Airways mini-roller coaster. There was nothing mini about this ride, at least for Mom and Julio. So fast and so twisty! "Ahhhh... what am I doing to myself?!!!" was all Julio could say while on it.

We strolled through the sidewalks of New York City and enjoyed all the classic landmarks such as a subway station, the NYC library, the statue of Atlas, and the grand theater. It could not have been more real with familiar scenes like a construction site, an old parking meter, plus rows and rows of bistros and facades that we all see in lots and lots of movies set in this greatest Metro of the world. This is where we met and had our picture taken with funniest man Charlie Chaplin.

Scenes from Old Egypt inspired by the movie The Mummy were recreated. We tried the Treasurer Hunter ride but could not muster enough guts to test the high-speed indoor roller coaster (ala Space Mountain). It was so dark walking up the steps to the ride, and the creepy sounds added to our hesitation. Scary!

As a contrast to the seemingly scary old Egypt, was the Madagascar site. It was so friendly and all the rides were all friendly. Ofcourse we just had to try the carousel! Not because of anything else but because Dad and Mom wanted us to try it.

The Sci-fi Land was partially operational- still we had our heads spiining from the Accelerator. It was supposed to test our inter-galactic stamina, and we supposed we passed the test easily as we had a double-take of this ride and still we remained standing after! Well, maybe not Dad who had enough with his first try. Still of Dad, he was quite disappointed because the Battlestar Gallactica Rollercoaster was still closed. Oh well, maybe next time.

What a trip it was! So much fun and adventure! Happy birthday to us! and thanks Dad and Mom for the awesome gift!

Shooting Range Adventure

Julio finally got his wish! To try out his skills in sniping in a real shooting range. We, Julio and Diego, did it at Fort Bonifacio Army Club nonetheless- how real can it get than that?! We even donned our best cammos and military caps! Initially set for 100 rounds each, we so enjoyed that we ended up doubling that and shooting 200 rounds each instead! Thanks to our very generous Dad!

Here is a short video of our cool adventure. We promise to save money and come back for more soon!

Food Sale In School

Julio was the muffin boy, the muffin boy, the muffin boy who lives in lalala.

For the Food Sale in school, Julio and Mom baked some banana muffins to sell. Because Julio wanted to sell something healthy. Julio not only did well in the baking, he also did great in selling! His muffins were such big hits with the teachers .. and even the principal! He did earn some big bucks which he used to buy books from the Book Fair.

Popcorn! Get your popcorn from Diego!

For his part, Diego sold popcorn... and for added service he thought of adding selling kool-aid juices too! He sold out easily! With the big gimmick of "wearing his products", he easily did get the attention and the bucks of of his buyers! Some big bucks for Diego here!

First Day High

School year 2010-11 officially started today for Julio and Diego! Parents are so proud of the boys- they woke up early and was in school early. We still cannot believe how fast they grow up. Julio is now in Grade 5! My my, five seems a big big number. And Diego is in the 2nd Grade already!

The boys will do well this school year (as always). We have no doubt. Keep it up, Julio and Diego! You always make Mom and Dad proud.

Summer Road Trips 2010

Summer this year was so so hot! It was El Nino in the Philippines that's why. But that did not get in the way for us to have fun road trips and family bonding times.

First Stop: SUBIC
We headed to the beach at the Subic Bay. We stayed in a hotel called the Lighthouse Marina-- "Luxurious!" according to Diego. And ofcourse once at the beach, we just had to do our favorite thing of riding the waves not with a surfboard but with a jetski. Julio even tried driving it. Yeah!

Later, we went go-karting for more speed. This time, Julio really got to drive his own kart while, Diego coolly navigated for Dad.

Most part, we were just chillaxing on the beach. Our most favorite thing to do! Set up our tent, played on the sand under the sun, and swam.

Next Stop: TAGAYTAY
Then we went to the mountains for some cool breeze, to further beat El Nino! In Tagaytay, we stayed in a resort, in a stilt house located high up in the mountains. Imagine, our view from our veranda is literally the top of a very tall palm tree! According to Diego, "it's like living in a tree house!" Exactly! Our house was really unique. It was like a nipa hut made of bamboos but with all the modern amenities like air conditioner, television, refrigerator, and even hot water in the shower. It was our first time to stay in such a place. We really find it cool! Literally too. And we could hear birds and insects chirping at night through the early morning. Something that we rarely experience in the city.

And when in Tagaytay, what is there to do but eat and feast. By the mountain, by the lake, overlooking Taal volcano, in a garden, al fresco, on a terrace... You name it, we did all that. We were always stuffed.

Boys Office Outing

We joined Mom's office outing! We joined her officemates (bosses included!) in an out-of-town trip to Batangas. Quite an experience-- riding a van full of adults --yes, we were the only kids and the only non-employee!

We went to a resort called Lago De Oro (translated this means Lake of Gold). It is a resort that operates the first cable wakeboard park in the Philippines. We wanted to try wakeboarding but were still too young. Ah nuts-- Diego was so disappointed. But there were so much more to do at Lago de Oro! And we really had a blast! We swam in the pool, listen to adults murderous karaoke, had lunch aboard a raft and then after jumped into the water for a cool dip!

We definitely enjoyed and hope that Mom's officemates did too having us around. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they invite us again next time.

Handsome Escorts to ReiNANAY

A different kind of experience for us this summer- we played escorts to our Nana who joined a Santa Cruzan for lolas in her village in the province of Laguna. The event was in honor of the village's fiesta (feast day).

The parade was a bit long but the walk even longer if you are part of it. The best thing was that we got to dress up and wear our suits and neckties (though we do not recommend this on a humid summer day.

Hail to the Chefs!

We tried our hand at decorating cupcakes!

The real treat was that it was at our favorite dessert place Sonja's at Serendra. Sure we love the cupcakes (especially the frosting!) at Sonja's but we also like the store itself. Stepping into the store is like stepping back in time, the 1950's! All classic and cozy!

Decorating a cupcake, we found out, was not as easy as it seems. But sure is as delicious as it seems! We really had so much fun creating our own colors for the frosting, and designing cupcakes (and cookies!). Best part was the eating of our very own creations! Yum, yum! Diego had his fill of sugar good to last for a week according to Mom. We also shared some of the cupcakes with Dad and our yayas.

Holy Week and Easter 2010

Holy week of traditions and rites.

On Maundy Thursday, we went to visit 7 churches (or "Visita Iglesias"). We went to a mix of old and new churches, some we have been to before and others first time for us to visit. It was also a bit of a historical tour as we visited the Church where Diego was baptized and to the church where Julio took his first communion.

Here was the route we took:
1. St. Alphonsus (that's Diego's second name!) in Magallanes
2. Don Bosco
3. Sto. Nino Chapel (in Greenbelt)
4. St. Andrew's (in Bel-Air where Diego was baptized)
5. San Antonio (Forbes)
6. Holy Child Chapel (inside Fort Bonifacio where Julio's first communion was)
7. St. Therese's (at the Newport City), this church is newly built, and we were first timers

It is believed that if one will get his wish if he completed the Visita Iglesias.

On Good Friday, we headed to Tarlac for a pilgrimage. Our destination was the Monasterio de Tarlac, a seminary and church atop a mountain. The church is also a popular pilgrimage destination as it is the only church in Asia which has a relic or part of the original cross where Jesus Christ was nailed. It was amazing up there!

Another interesting part of the trip was seeing flagellants and penitents along the road. Ouch! We could not stand the sight of men whipping themselves and getting bloodied. We also saw some men carrying heavy crosses. Double ouch! Mom could not bring herself to photograph them- she said she gets too weak to even press the shutter button. Dad and Mom said that these penitents were making personal sacrifices to ask for repentance.

On Black Saturday, we stayed home.

On Easter Sunday, we woke up early to go to mass and celebrate Jesus' resurrection! Alleluia, alleluia! Then off for some egg hunting and partying! Happy Easter everyone!

Diego Gets Academic Excellence Award

Congratulations Diego!

We are so proud of Diego who got the highest academic award in school, the Gold Leaf Award. He got a gold medal for academic distinction! He finished first grade on top of his class, getting perfect 7s in all core subjects consistently from the 1st to the 3rd trimester. But of course, his average grade point was perfect 7 (the highest possible grade!).

Also during the Recognition Day, Diego was cited for leading his class in the 3rd trimester in subjects Mathematics, Social Studies, Reading, Filipino, IT and PE (his favorite!).

It was definitely one proud moment for the whole family!

Excellent job! We are confident that you can keep this up. Your teacher, Ms. Tessie puts it perfectly when she said "For Diego, everything is easy!" Woohoo!

Hot Air Balloon Festival 2010

It has become a family tradition- the annual road trip to the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Clark, Pampanga. This year, we played hosts to cousin Joshua who experienced the Hot Air Balloon Festival for the first time.

As in the past, we woke up really early before sunrise, prepared our picnic basket then headed North to Clark. And once destination reached, it was fun, fun all the way. First, we watched hot air balloons of various sizes and shapes as they flew through the air. Then, we set up our tent and got ready for some more adventure! We did our rounds of the "military booths". The tanks, the fighter planes, the army jeeps and for the first time, helicopters! Then the ammunition display- guns, camouflage and other gadgets! We could not get enough of these-- and we look forward to doing this again and again in years to come.
